It’s All a Little Sus

She sat at the kitchen counter on the old rickety stool she had sat on when she was a little girl. She kicked her feet, thumping the real oak counter. She was eating cheap store brand frosted flakes in one of the ancient porcelain bowls from her aunt’s cabinets. A pure silver spoon clinked on the bowl each time she scooped a spoonful into her mouth. Hadley absently stared at the rows of spices hanging on the wall below the cupboard while she shoveled dripping spoons of cereal into her mouth.

Minnie broke whatever zone she’d been in when she spoke near Hadley’s elbow. “Cereal is for breakfast. Not dinner.”

“Yeah, but I’m really not in the mood to cook.”

“I get it now!” Minnie scooted closer to the bowl of cereal, watching it like a, well, like a cat watched a mouse. “Cereal is your kibble!”

Hadley choked on her frosted flakes. By the time she stopped coughing and spluttering Minnie had her face buried in the bowl of cereal. She glanced up at Hadley, a smug kitten grin on her face, completely unrepentant about stealing a second dinner.

Hadley slid off the stool, wiping the tears from her coughing fit out of her eyes. “Right, well. I have a lot of stuff to do, anyway.”

Minnie lifted her head. “Like what?”

Baron was still chowing down and lifted his head, golden eyes fixed on the two. Shaking his head as if disappointed, he lowered his head back to his kibble, emitting a low growl.

Maybe I can figure out who killed her.” She peered down at Baron whose face was still buried in the kibble, his teeth noisily crunching the food. “Can I see her during the day too?”

He nodded, still not looking up.

She nudged him gently with her foot and he stopped eating and met her eyes. “Yes.” His tone was long-suffering. “You should be able to see her. I haven’t been able to reach her. She is stuck in her death spiral and I’m not sure if she will respond to any external stimuli.” When Hadley didn’t respond, he shrugged in the awkward way that cats had. “Just be careful.” He lowered his head back to the bowl and began crunching loudly.

Minnie followed Hadley out the door. Her black striped tail waved over her back like a cheerful flag. The strong scents of the summer garden hit them like a blow. The heat wasn’t quite oppressive but well on its way to that level. Hadley loved it though. She stood for just a moment allowing the sun to beat down on her shoulders, eyes closed, just absorbing the warmth. Her heart slowed, seeming to thump in time with the gentle breeze breathing across the thick vegetation of the garden. A gentle
